Spruce Home Remodel

HDR Remodeling’s client came to us with a challenge to remodel an early 1920s Berkeley hills home that he spent his childhood in. The challenge was to create a home that felt as though it was both as he remembered it and yet undiscovered. One of the client’s fondest memories growing up was that his family allowed him to decorate the walls of the stairwell, from floor to ceiling, with an eclectic collage of posters, ticket stubs, cartoons, cutouts, and newspaper articles. This art piece would be the focal point of the entire home remodel.

The project included a kitchen remodel, a new half bathroom, a master bathroom remodel on the upper level, and extensive electrical work throughout the home. The stairwell collage, along with other pieces of the original family home like the hardwood floors and a built-in  hutch, would be protected and restored to their original beauty.

Kitchen RemodeL IN Berkeley

On the first floor, the home remodel included a kitchen renovation, pantry refresh, and dining room conversion to make it a functioning partner to the kitchen. The kitchen and dining room were separated into two small rooms, which was common for that era. The clients were determined to protect and preserve the quality of the original house while upgrading it with a functional layout for entertaining.

Using appropriate technology, natural light, and space and materials honestly, HDR Remodeling went on to create a balanced environment by removing the walls between the kitchen and dining room and giving the space a free-flowing, open nature. In the spirit of incorporating the old with the new - and maintaining a functional division of space - we refurbished and relocated the original built-in hutch to the dining room, creating additional storage for glassware and China. Facing the kitchen, we incorporated a built-in frameless bench seating with hinged top for storage.

Master Bathroom Remodel

The master bathroom went through a complete renovation with the crowning feature being a large walk-in shower with polished nickel Hansgrohe fixtures and CL Lawrence clear glass, sliding shower doors. The marbleized accent tiles from Lunada Bay give the shower and vanity backsplash a mosaic appearance that pairs beautifully with the green floor tiles to provide a flawless and serene environment.

DECK Remodel

Living in the hills of Berkeley, the client wanted to be able to enjoy the view on an outdoor deck. HDR Remodeling supported the build of an enlarged redwood deck with wide French sliding doors capable of accommodating large patio furniture and perfect for hosting guests.
